It's far easier to complete runs with custom characters (at least for now) because your character is generally more tailored to speedrunning and you don't need as many random elements from the seed in order to go fast. My character is, predictably, a giant werewolf build, and Joker's character is a demolitionist build (we worked on our characters together to get something a bit more convenient than robot for a support player — robot relies too much on visiting ammo and loadout stations).
